Black Bird is based on the 2010 autobiographical book In with the Devil: a Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption by James Keene and Hillel Levin, which chronicles Keene’s true life experiences while trying to kill a get told confession of serial killer Larry Hall. According to Newsweek, Keene, who had worked as a drug dealer, was caught by local law enforcement and the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) in 1996 and sentenced to 10 years in prison without the possibility of parole. Just like on the show, Keene had an opportunity to get out of his sentence if he could extract a confession from Larry Hall. Keene initially didn’t want to participate, but eventually agreed after his father suffered a stroke, motivated by the idea of spending time with him.

Hall was arrested in 1995 for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl named Jessica Roach based on a confession he later tried to disprove. Assistant US Attorney Lawrence Beaumont was determined to get Hall to confess again to the Roach murder and the many other murders of young girls he was suspected of including Tricia Reitler, who disappeared in 1993.

Keene was able to get Hall to confess to killing Roach and, after some time, Reitler as well. Keene was then released from prison in early 1999 and his criminal record was erased. After his release, Keene was able to spend five years with his father before his father died.
