The pandemic has created havoc in the world to the extent that major US health officials have easily demanded a deep investigation towards the origin of the virus. In fact, the debate around whether the virus has jumped from an animal host into a human or has escaped from a Wuhan lab in China has been raging for a long while since last year. In fact, every meeting, the WHO has become clearly a dive to investigate the source of this virus. While vaccinations and booster doses help the populations across the world fight the pandemic, it is important to note why the pandemic arose in the first place.
What Is The Status Of Investigation Into Origins Of Coronavirus?
The virus needs to be traced to its origins, which is what some of the United State’s top health officials have indicated to WHO. In the annual ministerial meeting on Tuesday with the World Health Organization, Mr Xavier Becerra, Health and Human Services Secretary, indicated that it would be wise to allow established international experts to “the independence to fully assess the source of the virus and the early days of the outbreak.” This is a clear signal that the Biden administration is totally invested in pushing WHO towards an expanded investigation into the origin of the virus.
One of the earliest theory in the world about the origin of the virus was that it first came into a Wuhan market that was selling wild animal meat. The malady then quickly spread via people across the globe. However, the virus is known to be similar to a 2014 coronavirus that earlier had emerged from a bat in a cave in China. The viral genome structure is natural and definitely not bio-engineered to be a weapon.
However, there is a possibility that the virus may have escaped from a known laboratory in Wuhan, one which has been studying coronaviruses for a very long time. It is the Wuhan Institute of Virology and is a well-known lab in the country. It was found recently that in November 2019, just a few weeks before the virus was seen in the city, a few Wuhan lab researchers were hospitalized. In February this year, a WHO-led team had indicated that the situation of a lab leak was unlikely given the high standards of security and precautions maintained in it. The international scientific community, however, called the investigations and their conclusions politically aligned and tainted.
As per the scientific fraternity, the theory of naturally occurring virus getting transmitted from animal body to human body still holds strong. However, since the origin of the virus has not been traced back to a definite animal, the theory of this virus coming into the world as a lab leak seems to be holding ground. A deeper probe has also been warranted by Mr Anthony S. Fauci, chief advisor to Joe Biden and leading infectious disease expert of the government. “Because we don’t know 100 per cent what the origin is, it’s imperative that we look and we do an investigation,” he said. The White House Senior Advisor Mr Andy Slavitt has expressed anxiety and frustration over the Chinese government’s regulations posed on independent investigators “It is our position that we need to get to the bottom of this, and we need a completely transparent process from China. We need the WHO to assist in that matter. We don’t feel like we have that now,” he said. “That’s a critical priority for us.” The United Nations has issued a joint report alongside Chinese scientists in March, but received scepticism and flake from the international scientist community. Therefore, it is only a matter of time when the pleas and advisory of the US government will trigger an international demand for details into the reasons why three lab researchers were hospitalized in autumn of 2019 and whether the origin of the virus was human research or a wild animal.
