Infinity Pool Is Drawing Strong Reactions From Critics

Early reviews position Infinity Pool as a worthy successor to Cronenberg’s Possessor. Roger Ebert.com’s Brian Tallerico even suggested that ticket buyers should make sure they’ve seen the 2020 film before delving into the current offering. A common element in both titles is the director’s use of body horror to convey different themes and motifs. The tradition appears to be a direct trait passed down from his father, legendary director David Cronenberg. Known for his own unabashed explorations of sexuality and body horror, the elder Cronenberg has directed such iconic titles as Shivers, Videodrome, Rabid and most recently Crimes of the Future.

Heather Wixson watches Brendan Cronenberg expand into territory even his father left uncharted. The Daily Dead reviewer described the film as a fixture in genre cinema. “Cronenberg has created one of the most intoxicatingly perverted films of the last decade,” she wrote. She added that it was a “cinematic achievement that’s frighteningly bold (to be honest, I still wonder how that got an R rating), totally off-kilter and overly violent, and I would have can’t love it anymore.”
