Tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year.  That is a million more than deaths that occur as a result of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. Smoking has been proved hazardous and addicting in nature by medical science, and then came the new alternate for smoking that is vaping or electronic cigarettes, which are less harmful compared to smoking but have their own limitations and effects on the smoker’s health.

A recently conducted research has revealed that vaping solutions created in illegal homemade labs (garage labs) in Appalachia might be proving deadly for the users of vapes. E-cigarettes (vaping) are devices that fulfill the role of cigarettes, which consist of smokable, refillable, and disposable containers that hold a liquid that contains nicotine, solvents, and chemical flavors. When a person inhales, they put negative pressure on the device that triggers the battery to heat the solution, which is then atomized into vapor.

Based on the type of cartridge used, it may contain zero nicotine or up to about 16 mg nicotine. One cartridge has enough fluid for about 250 “puffs.” However, nicotine concentrations and fluid volumes plus the compounds in the fluids can vary, depending upon who makes the e-cigarette. It may also consist of chemicals, heavy metal molecules, and other elements which may not be appropriate for inhalation.

The study was conducted on 17 patients from the rural places of Appalachia who were seeking treatment for EVALI (electronic cigarettes and vaping-associated lung injury) caused by using vaping products from August 2019 to March 2020. EVALI was first recognized by U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention as a deadly disease when nearly 2,300 Americans, most of them young, became sick, and 47 of them died from the mysterious and hazardous lung illness connected to vaping in 2019.

The patients involved in the study were aged around 33 and had a high amount of drug abuse, and were in deteriorating conditions. The research was conducted to study the effect of vaping on rural users as opposed to that of urban users.

The research also discovered that along with nicotine, vaping liquids used by the trio of most severely ill patients contained large amounts of lethal volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, propylene glycol, acetone, and cyclohexane.

Inhalation of all these volatile organic compounds into your lungs at high temperatures, which produce these toxic gaseous compounds, could lead to chemical burns in your lungs, according to Dr. Sunil Sharma from the West Virginia University School of Medicine, who is the study author of this research.

The main reason is the high presence of VOC in the vaping liquids due to their production in illegal garage labs, which are very easy to procure and are of a cheaper quality. The non-safe production and also the content of vegetable oil and glycerol used in the vaping devices and solutions may also be the cause for the EVALI to be affected in the rural users who only has access to the unsafe product compared to urban users who possess’ multiple ways to buy a safe product.

The only way to avoid these kinds of complications is to verify the authenticity of any product we purchase and only to buy products that are approved and certified by the government.
