How Simu Liu’s Failed Crazy Rich Asians Audition Affected His Career

Simu Liu recalls auditioning four times for Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, but was ultimately told no (via the How to Fail with Emily Day podcast).

According to Liu, he got feedback that he didn’t get the part because decision makers didn’t think he had that mysterious “it factor” that a leading actor needs. He said the words were a huge blow to his confidence as a performer, as he felt that despite his ambitions as a lead, he could spend the rest of his career in supporting roles.

“I didn’t have the thing that wanted to get people to see it. It was at a time that was very difficult for me. I was trying to figure out if I could be the main character or if I could just be a supporting character for my entire career,” the actor said.

He added that he lets his desperation flow into what he is showing the filmmakers. “It made me take a step back and realize maybe I wanted it too much. Maybe I was too desperate and that desperation showed in my work,” he said.

Liu was heartbroken about not getting 2018’s box office hit Crazy Rich Asians, but he took failure as a learning opportunity and changed how he approached auditions, showing more confidence and eventually impressing Marvel enough to play Shang to get hold of -Chi.
