Speaking to Variety about the two-part 11th episode of The Sandman Season 1, Neil Gaiman revealed he nearly spoiled the surprise on several occasions. Gaiman said that not only did he tweet the cover of a fictional book that features prominently in the “Calliope” portion of Episode 11, he almost spoiled the existence of the “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” segment. “I replied to someone on ‘A Dream of a Thousand Cats’ and said we’ve already started casting the cats,” the writer said. Luckily, Gaiman quickly realized he was starting to say too much and the conversation ended there. But on another occasion, when Gaiman and Allan Heinberg were interviewed about the series, Gaiman almost revealed his surprise again.
“[D]During one of the interviews where people were like, ‘How did you get this amazing cast?’ I started just listing the cast, and on and on and on, and I said Derek Jacobi,” Gaiman told Variety. That would have been quite the right spoiler for those paying close attention as Jacobi doesn’t appear in the series until Episode 11.
Fans should watch episode 11 closely, especially the ending when Calliope (Melissanthu Mahut) tells Dream (Tom Sturridge) that she’s going to visit him soon so they can talk about their son “and really mourn him.” While it’s not exactly clear what the story arc for season 2 of The Sandman will be, her son plays an important role in the graphic novels.
