Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, creators of How I Met Your Mother, finally decided how the series would end in 2006 (via US Weekly) and filmed key scenes involving Ted’s (Radnor) children (David Henrie, Lyndsy Fonseca) for the eventual one finale of the show . What the duo didn’t know in the mid-2000s was how they would come to the conclusion where Ted tells his kids he’d like to pursue Robin (Smulders) with their blessing.
After a fair amount of “won’t they” Season 4 of How I Met Your Mother ended with Barney (Harris) and Robin finally getting together. The two eventually break up in season 5 and break up their relationship before getting back together in season 8 and deciding to get married. In a Reddit thread “Ask Me Anything,” Bays and Thomas were asked when they decided to let Robin and Barney get married. “Between seasons five and six,” they wrote. “In season six, we really settled on what the endgame was going to be like.”
How I Met Your Mother fans on social media largely agree that Robin and Barney should have stayed together, but it’s interesting to see that their eventual split was planned well in advance. Building their relationship, particularly between the events of Season 6 and 8, feels all the more deliberate now that they know the writers had most of the endgame planned years in advance.
