Hocus Pocus 2’s Original Ending Would Have Been A Flashy Purgatory Party

During an appearance on Robert Peterpaul’s The Art of Kindness podcast, Hocus Pocus 2 costume designer Salvador Perez — who also happens to be the president of the Costume Designers Guild — discussed the film’s original musical ending, revealing that it almost took would be placed in a much more interesting place than a studio setting. Unfortunately, there just wasn’t room in the budget for that final moment of postmortem opulence.

“Unlike them who sing in the music studio, they should perform on stage in Purgatory,” Perez said. “I should do a golden version of them in golden costumes. We started this process and then they said, ‘No, we’re not going to do it, we don’t have the time or the money.’”

Perez also discussed his ideas for the scene’s costumes, and by the sound of it, the musical number was indeed gearing up for a real purgatory party.

“The audience was supposed to be all in red, and they were all different period costumes, but all in red,” he said. “So 15th century, 16th century, 17th…all those dead men in red in the booths and then the ladies in gold on the stage.”

The first “Hocus Pocus” was originally intended to have a spookier tone, but the combination of kid-friendly funny moments and just the right amount of creepy menace in the final film was a key factor in the film’s slow-moving path to becoming a true Halloween classic. While the final credits scene from the sequel, which has the Sandersons fooling around in a studio, is utterly entertaining, the scrapped music scene set in purgatory would have suited the “hocus pocus” tone really well and a nice way to show the ladies are pulling off a great one To have time even if they are not actively terrorizing the land of the living.
