Here’s Why Jennifer Coolidge Likes Playing Troubled Characters

Jennifer Coolidge credits The White Lotus creator Mike White with creating a layered, complex character with her in mind, while opening Coolidge up for similar roles in the process. “Mike gave me [Tanya] two years ago – someone who’s complicated and shitty – and it was such a gift because sometimes I get things that are just really simple,” Coolidge told Vogue. “Mike was the person in the world you hope exists. That person who gives you a life-changing challenge.” According to Coolidge, the role of Tanya, an heiress in search of inner peace, led directly to her joining The Watcher.

For Coolidge, playing roles like Tanya and Karen sparked her desire to play similar characters, especially ones with an undertone of sadness. “I’d love to continue playing troubled people,” she said. “I feel like I can identify myself. I don’t want to play someone who is perfect. I think I’m more attracted to sad people. A lot of comedy people are sad clowns.” This melancholy can be felt in Tanya in Season 2 of The White Lotus. Though she no longer mourns her late mother, her Sicilian escape is plagued by her troubled marriage. “There’s a lot of sadness in the world, and it’s often hard to deny,” adds Coolidge. “The sad clown is more aware of a part of your brain you can’t deny.”
