A notable change from the comic strip to Netflix’s “Slumberland” is that Nemo has been transformed from a little boy into a girl. The character, who joins forces with Jason Momoa’s flip to find her late father, is also an original for the film. Aside from that, the comic and the movie share the same concept of a kid named Nemo entering a dream world full of fantastical creatures and adventures.

Francis Lawrence also noted in an interview that Flip’s character was not only inspired by the comic, but also by Lawrence, Momoa, and costume designer Trish Summerville, although the character still shares the same name in both the strip and the film.

“I didn’t have that much knowledge of the original source material, I had a fresh start on Flip. I knew I wanted Jason to play the role because I knew he personally had a lot of the elements that it takes to play a character like that,” the director told The Wrap, adding that the trio co-created the lively look of the character.

Slumberland is a major adaptation of Winsor McCay’s comic strip with a reported budget of $150 million, but it’s actually not the first time the fantasy has made its way onto screens, according to The Guardian.
