HBO Spent A Dragon-Sized Amount Of Money To Bring The Last Of Us To Life

One of the many elements of the show that Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin discussed was the size of the series’ sets. Due to years of maintenance hiatus, all of The Last of Us’ man-made structures have decayed and been reclaimed by nature, a look the series creators say was inspired by the book The World Without Us. ‘, which speculates on how the structures of the world would collapse if man failed to maintain them.

But it takes a lot of money to give the impression that no money has been invested in maintaining these structures. The total sum of money is staggering. As reported by The New Yorker, the nine-episode season of The Last of Us cost HBO more money than each of the first five seasons of the hugely popular (and expensive) series Game of Thrones.

To put that in perspective, the most expensive of the first five seasons of Game of Thrones was the second at around $69 million, which means The Last of Us is at least more expensive. However, since the final season of Game of Thrones cost $90 million, we can safely assume that The Last of Us’ budget didn’t quite reach that stratospheric sum.

We’ll see if the money was worth it when “The Last of Us” premieres on HBO on Jan. 15.
