On June 13, with four of the six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi available on Disney+, The Hollywood Reporter ran an interview with Hayden Christensen about various aspects of his role on the show. During their conversation, interviewer Ryan Parker asked Christensen how long it takes to apply his Vader makeup.
“It’s quite extensive. It’s a good four to five hours in the makeup chair,” Christensen replied, before praising the team of makeup artists working on the show. He also mentioned the input from Lucasfilm Executive Creative Director Doug Chiang on what he wanted Darth Vader to look like.
Though Vader requires extensive makeup to distinguish this incarnation of the character from Anakin Skywalker, Christensen told Collider that he simply views Vader as an older version of his prequel trilogy character. “My main thought was just that it’s Anakin under the mask,” he said.
For what it’s worth, many “Star Wars” fans online have praised Christensen’s performance. For example, a tweet from a user @anakintstark Reading Hayden Christensen’s Return as Darth Vader was one of the best things that has ever happened in our contemporary culture received more than 4,000 likes. Christensen’s approach to the character – including the hours he spends in the vanity chair – seems to be paying off.
