Goblin Slayer face reveal hoped for in Goblin Slayer S2 anime
The Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown movie came out in 2020 and it has been confirmed that the Goblin Slayer Season 2 release date is in 2023, but what many anime fans want to see is Goblin Slayer’s face. After all, both the anime season 1 and the Goblin Slayer manga all teased us about it by hinting at what Orcsbolg looks like but not giving full details.
The fight to protect the village against the goblin lord and his horde of minions was climactic enough, but when the priestess asked the titular character to remove his helmet at the end, it was the first time most other characters saw the goblin hunter’s face. It was explained that “this is a warrior’s face” and all the girls were thrilled to see this surprisingly pretty face.
The problem was that the anime only gave us side views or scenes where his face is only partially shown. Some fans are hoping that Goblin Slayer Season 2 will animate GS’s face in full form, but that may not be the case.
Finally, series writer Kagyu Kumo deliberately chose not to name the characters, as he “thought it would be better to give each reader the space to fill in the blanks with their own names for the characters.” Following this logic, Goblin Slayer’s face reveal may never happen as anime fans are supposed to use their imaginations to fill in the gap.
A Reddit user has a fan theory about how Goblin Slayer’s face reveal relates to his identity and how he evolves as a person. GS’s tragic past has seen him distance himself from his own humanity despite his obsession with killing goblins.
At the moment, Goblin Slayer’s identity is absorbed by his professional desire in the Adventurers’ Guild to drive all goblins to annihilation. He maintains this professional identity even when he’s at home with Cow Girl or enjoying time with his friends.
“Until he forms one that separates his professional and personal life, we will never see his personal face under the helmet because his professional, the helmet, covers it,” wrote TheAnonymousDoughnut.
If that’s the case, not even Goblin Slayer Season 3 will show Goblin Slayer’s face to the real world, as GS still has a long way to go to regain its human identity. Thankfully, we can turn to Goblin Slayer’s fan fiction art to get an idea of what he might look like.
Some anime fans felt that this fan art was inconsistent with the character as “his eyes are way too happy and lit up. It’s not his personality because he’s seen and experienced traumatic things.” Instead, another artist is thought to have captured Goblin Slayer’s tragic soul.
There is one major exception from the official series that does not feature Goblin Slayer’s face. The manga Goblin Slayer: Year One shows his face in different angles when he is younger and as a kid. But even then, part of his face is usually obscured by hair or shadows. It even notes that adventurers who don’t wear a helmet do so to build their reputation.
To see the full grown adult version animated, anime fans just have to wait and see where the Goblin Slayer anime takes us. Stay tuned!
