Episode 9 of “American Horror Story: NYC” doesn’t hold back when it comes to showing some absolutely tragic moments. The two-parter revolves around Patrick (Russell Tovey), Sam (Zachary Quinto) and several other main characters as they face their regrets before succumbing to the AIDS epidemic. You can’t sugarcoat it – it’s a dark, bitter and surprisingly poignant turn for the series. As it turns out, the episode’s willingness to trade in horror for a confrontation with real-life tragedy resonated with many fans. “I’ve never cried to AHS before,” said one fan tweeted after the premiere of the episode. “This season gave us a REAL American horror story.”

Some viewers found the episode exceptionally depressing by series standards. While there were some “American Horror Story” moments that made fans weep, like the death of Jessica Lange’s sister Jude in “Asylum,” the series has rarely managed to capture the hearts of its viewers to this degree. “Is this the saddest AHS episode ever?” Another user tweeted.

As might be expected with such an unprecedented shift in tone for the series, the ending to American Horror Story: NYC didn’t prove popular with every fan. Even so, many were quick to defend the episode for capturing what it seemed set to do: make viewers howl. “IDK, as you all say, the ending was awful,” said one viewer tweeted. “I literally cried for 2 hours. That was beautifully done.”
