A new study has developed a model that states that sometimes all the abilities that people gain may not come from their brains. This is known as the executive function. This might not stay or develop inside a person’s head all the time. Some outside influences or issues may also trigger them.
In Perspectives on Psychological Science journal, the theory was described and it stated that the brain draws on dynamic systems. This theory is basically originated in mathematics and physics. Scientists have been using this phenomenon to articulate complex matters and theories. These examples include cloud formation and flying patterns of birds.
External Issues May Possibly Help To Develop Internal Control
A new research team from Washington State University, which was led by human development assistant professor Sammy Perone stated that they are trying to apply the executive function to see how it changes within a child’s brain. They have seen a result role in almost everything from children’s readiness for school to their social relationships. This result can give them a good teenage and adulthood, as the research suggests.
Perone said that children tend to be influenced easily by external facts that can shape their brains. He added, “As humans, we use our experience and norms to decide what the appropriate path to take is, so to encourage executive function development, we want to help children build those connections between cues and appropriate behaviors.”
Not only outside of the school, but these practices can also be made within a classroom as well. These terms may include subjects such as designs on the wall, verbal guidance, or the way schedules are set up. Sometimes reducing environmental disturbances can help a child to understand and control their performance like having sharpened pencils on support or resolving a tottering desk chair. These can be a controlling factor for them to do other physical works like sleeping and eating on time.
All the previous researches about this executive function were basically distributed within three separate neurocognitive methods: working memory, inhibitory control, which is the capacity to prevent yourself from doing something, and cognitive flexibility, which leads one person to switch between works. Applying these studies among children caused many new questions about their reaction.
The research is trying to train the cognitive processes that make people do something or change the pattern of working. If it can be implemented, one will have control over one’s brain and work. This could be used everywhere in a person’s life. Most grown-up people think that the behavior is only about the reaction to a particular environment, thus they don’t show much participation in this study.
Another research from cognitive scientist Sabine Doebel called for a redefinition of executive function in 2020. It was described that as the skills develop with age and time, it is possible to control them with external effects. The study from the University of Kansas and University of Tennessee expand the idea of bringing dynamic systems theory to give factors to organize their behavior.
