Coincidentally, this interview was published on November 24, 2022, the same day that “Criminal Minds: Evolution” debuted on Paramount+. Showrunner Erica Messer openly discussed the hows and whys of the series’ return. Messer, of course, was showrunner on Criminal Minds for several seasons before it was canceled. And as Messer told Deadline, part of her confidence in bringing the series back came from how well things were going on the show when it ended.
“None of us wanted it [Criminal Minds] to end creatively,” Messer admitted during the interview. Messer also reportedly claimed her CBS bosses never gave her an explanation as to why they canceled the show in the first place. She added, “We felt that it many more stories to tell,” noting further, “The cast was in such a groove and everyone loved being there.”
Luckily, Messer and her “Criminal Minds” team didn’t have to endure too much downtime between the 2020 series finale and the streaming debut of “Evolution,” as they were barely two years apart. And it seems even a pandemic couldn’t throw the gang out of their creative groove, as Messer explained, “We had four months to shoot ten episodes and I was pretty confident we could rally our troops to do it.” Aside from notable cast absences, the “troops” for “Evolution” have assembled strongly and have delivered arguably one of the strongest seasons of “Criminal Minds” to date.
