That creative is none other than New Amsterdam executive producer and frequent director Peter Horton, who admitted in a recent interview that he still doesn’t know why the show was canceled. He was speaking to series creator and showrunner David Schulner as the couple discussed the final episode of New Amsterdam with Deadline. When asked if they felt they could finish the show the way they wanted, Horton responded with a resounding, “I don’t.”

Horton added he feels the show has at least a few more seasons to go. “I still think this thing could have, should have, gone a few more years,” he said, continuing, “There are so many stories left to tell and these characters are so interesting.” Horton later claimed that he also doesn’t think viewers are ready to end the show.

Perhaps more importantly, Horton believes there was no legitimate reason to cancel New Amsterdam given that its popularity is hardly waning, stating, “We’re #3 on Netflix right now.” Schulner was quick to point out that the series continues to matter in the ratings game, adding, “And we’re still number one in our time slot.” Given the obvious facts, Horton later chimed in that he was genuinely baffled by the series’ cancellation remains, and admitted, “It’s a bit of a mystery why it was canceled, to tell you the truth.” And given his and Schulner’s claims, I guess he has good reason to wonder why “New Amsterdam” isn’t part of more of NBC’s primetime lineup.
