Donning an 85-pound metal suit forced Emily Blunt to delve deep into herself to bring her character to life. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Blunt spoke about her experience on the set of Edge of Tomorrow, where she starred as Sergeant Rita Vrataski, who works with Tom Cruise’s character Major William Cage.
To find this aggression, Blunt was asked to learn Krav Maga, an Israeli martial art. “They wanted me to be as aggressive as possible,” Blunt explained. “Maybe they thought I’d just look like a pansy in the movie.” However, Blunt surprised everyone, especially her husband, John Krasinski. “He works out at the same gym, and he walked in and saw me repeatedly kneeling a bag like I’m kneeling in someone’s balls,” she added with an innocent giggle at the end.
Despite those laughs, making yourself the best weapon didn’t come cheap. Blunt almost broke his nose on set, and also sustained injuries to his ribs and collarbone, according to People. Her hard work was worth it and paid off, and she and Cruise were able to put on performances that audiences enjoyed. In the end they were able to pull it off, because “Edge of Tomorrow” is considered one of the best science fiction films of the 2010s.
