After the trailer-for-the-trailer (why is that still there these days?), here’s the new Strange World trailer begins with a giant spaceship landing in a family’s sprawling yard. Callisto Mal (voiced by Lucy Liu) appears and shouts “Baby Clade!” and invites the main protagonist Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal) on an expedition. Searcher’s partner Meridian (Gabrielle Union) informs us that Callisto is the President. Callisto tells them, “Our whole world is in great danger” and asks him to go with her. Despite his protestations that his missing father Jaeger (Dennis Quaid), not he, was the discoverer, Searcher, Meridian, their son Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White) and their three-legged dog Callisto and others join to discover a new “strange… world” to explore world.”
“We’re clearly in uncharted territory,” Callisto exclaims as they land on a purple and pink planet with vast expanses and fantastical animals. A multi-tentacled purple blob lashes out at Searcher until he’s rescued by a giant creature wielding a flamethrower. This “creature” turns out to be his missing father Jaeger – who is surprised to learn that he not only has a son but also a grandson. The family-oriented adventure continues as the now-extended family, three generations wide, braves wandering cliffs, carnivorous water, strange colorful creatures and painfully clumsy handshakes to save their world. With Bastille’s “Family Ties” as the backdrop, it’s a genuinely funny trailer (Ethan telling himself to be brave before running screaming through a cave is particularly hilarious) that gets audiences even more excited for the Thanksgiving release.
