Digimon Ghost Game: A mix of the supernatural and the paranormal
While most episodes of Digimon Ghost Game draw inspiration from history, narration, and previous horror films, the antagonist often turns out to be a real Digimon. However, this format will be changed in Episode 35. The episode included an emphasis on the mythology of a werewolf who has been terrorizing a small, traditional town for hundreds of years – far longer than Digimon actually existed.
However, there was still one Digimon to fight. As the narration progressed, Ruli Tsukiyono identified both Manticoremon as the cause of the city’s current troubles and unearthed the truth of the werewolf tale, ultimately concluding that humans in this situation were the real monsters.
The team joined Ruli when she traveled to a small mountain town to see her relatives in the first scene of episode 35. The bizarre creature, which they mistook for a werewolf, has attacked several townspeople. According to Sachi, one of the town’s elders, the werewolf would attack victims more frequently, and he would not stop until a “moon maiden” from the Tsukiyono family was sacrificed. Ruli initially insisted on not believing the legend and defying superstition. However, after having a vision in the forest of a woman being shot by arrows, she decided to pose as a victim to lure the thing out and demonstrate that a werewolf was not the true cause of the attack.
In the end, the villagers’ werewolf legend had a direct impact on the Digimon of the week for Episode 35. Manticoremon “ate the data” via mythology when he entered the real world, as Darcmon later determined, and began to believe it was him the werewolf. He didn’t know the real story; all he knew was the slandered version of the community. Manticoremon thus falls under the group of Digimon Ghost Game monsters that only strive to blend in with the actual world rather than act as a genuinely evil enemy.
Although ghosts were detected in Episode 33, “Whispers of the Dead”, Episode 35 opened up new avenues for more paranormal entities to manifest, leading to greater adventure and danger as the crew dealt with the Digimon that entered the real world had escaped.
