Fans like u/TheNarrator-ME see a robust complexity in the character’s emotional range not often found in Shonen protagonists, noting that “He hits [that] Sweet spot between being unwaveringly kind and being wholeheartedly just. In so many stories, the protag is either a mindless fighting machine or a sobbing pacifist who [lets] People die because of moral superiority.” Many other fans in the thread share this sentiment, and find it refreshing that while he is kind, he doesn’t hesitate to do the difficult things that need to be done, especially when an emotionally weaker character finds it it would be extremely difficult.
Show producer Yuma Takahashi loves the little villain and admitted during an interview with Anime News Network that they relate most to Tanjiro. Takahashi continued that “the way he meets challenges with courage and perseverance really inspires me to work harder.” And fans know he’ll need that nudge as it doesn’t seem like he will “Demon Slayer” will disappear in the foreseeable future.
