Deep Impact Plot
Teenage amateur astronomer Leo Beiderman observed something strange in the night sky at a star party. He sends a picture to the astronomer Dr. Marcus Wolf admitting that it is a comet on a collision course with Earth. Unfortunately, Wolf dies in a car accident during a race to raise the alarm. Journalist Jenny Lerner investigates Treasury Secretary Alan Rittenhouse about his relationship with “Ellie,” whom she believes to be a lover. Known to the FBI, she is taken to a meeting with President Tom Beck, who convinces her not to share the story for forty-eight hours in recovery in order to have a major role in the press conference, which he will agree to. She later learns that “Ellie” is an acronym for ELE, which stands for Extinction-Level Event. Beck reports that Comet Wolf-Beiderman could impact Earth in about a year and cause human extinction. It shows that the United States and Russia built the orbiting Messiah, a spacecraft to transport a group to alter the comet’s orbit with atomic bombs. Beiderman hits the Atlantic Ocean, the smaller comet, and creates a megatsunami that devastates much of the East Coast of the United States and hits Europe and Africa, causing millions of deaths. Leo, Sarah, and their little brother stay in Appalachia. Messiah’s crew offers to kill the giant comet by flying deep into it and detonating their remaining nuclear bombs. They say goodbye to their loved ones and carry out their strategy. Wolf is blasted into shorter pieces that burn up harmlessly in Earth’s atmosphere. After the megatsunami’s waters recede, President Beck addresses a large crowd at the destroyed United States Capitol, encouraging them to remember those lost as they begin to rebuild.
