James Gallagher may have made a career out of sea, but he’s done just as well in the mountains. In a Reddit AMA, Gallagher revealed that he used to be a semi-pro skier. “I’ve had a few minor sponsorships and coached a freeride ski team at Monarch Mountain near Salida, CO,” he wrote. Still, he’s modest about his skiing skills. “I’ve never been this good,” he said. “The concentration of talent in the ski industry is right [now] is absolutely ridiculous.”
Given the demanding commercial fishing schedule, Gallagher didn’t have much free time to hit the slopes. “Now I fish practically non-stop,” he said. “I was at home [for] like 8 weeks in the last 14 months. They keep me pretty busy.”
Gallagher’s background as a skier certainly helped his stamina to work tirelessly on the deck of Lady Alaska, as did his familiarity with working in hand-numbing conditions. In fact, Gallagher confirmed that the Bering Sea had colder temperatures than the Rocky Mountains. “A couple of times I forgot to change my gloves and run hydros,” he said in a second AMA. “It was literally the coldest thing I’ve ever experienced in my life.”
Skiing is certainly a way to relieve stress when you’re not hauling in crab pots, and Gallagher admits he still skis when he can. Other crew members prefer more illegal activities, like the “Deadliest Catch” star who tried his hand at bank robberies. Captain Sig Hansen, on the other hand, prefers to kick back with his family when he’s on land. As he told the Miami New Times, “With all the trips we do with Discovery, it’s nice to just be home and relax, just doing nothing.”
