Deadliest Catch Fans Raise Concern Over A Missing Safety Item

On the official subreddit for discussing Deadliest Catch, a user started a thread asking the commenters why none of the show’s deckhands seem to be wearing GPS trackers, whether on a survival suit or around their necks instead of the built-in GPS . Presumably such a feature would help crews locate missing members should they fall overboard.

A response from user ricky_lafleur simply implied that this missing security feature fits a general tendency of Deadliest Catch crew members to flaunt security best practices. Meanwhile, user picklepowerPB replied that this measure was prohibitively expensive and its usefulness may be flawed. “It doesn’t make much sense from an emergency/hazard standpoint, but sadly it does from a budget perspective,” they concluded of the lack of GPS trackers.

In 2009, Captain Keith Colburn told LAist that cost can actually limit what technologies are available to ship crews. “It depends on what you’re willing to spend — we could spend really big bucks to make them even better, we’re talking tens of thousands of dollars,” he said. Still, a GPS tracker on Colburn’s ship has helped the Coast Guard save his crew on at least one occasion, as he outlined in an interview with TV Shows Ace.

So while individual GPS devices could benefit deckhands in emergencies, it seems that their widespread implementation may not be a priority.
