It caught Lester Holt’s eye, but this two-hour episode of “Dateline” most likely lives on in the memories of countless viewers as well. Their full name is actually “The Ascension of Mother God” and it’s about a group that former members have called a cult. It tells the story of Amy Carlson, a spiritual seeker who became the leader of an order called Love Has Won. She began referring to herself as Mother God and demanded that her followers do the same, hence the episode title. During her tenure as Love Has Won’s spiritual director, Carlson became increasingly unpredictable, violent, and tyrannical.

Carlson’s health also began to deteriorate rapidly. According to the insider, this was likely because she was regularly taking colloidal silver, which she and LHW supporters would promote as a dietary supplement. It reportedly had the opposite effect, building up in her system to the point where she was essentially poisoning herself. After her death, her mummified body was discovered at the home of some of her most loyal supporters in Colorado. When it comes to true crime stories, this is the most incredible. No wonder HBO has a docuseries in the works, helmed by documentary filmmaker Hannah Olson (“Baby God”).
