In Episode 5, Anakin and Obi-Wan fight in a flashback. It’s a great moment, especially as we see Hayden Christensen’s unchanged face. Both are wearing their old clothes from the prequels, which gives the viewers a real nostalgia kick. It’s like stepping back in time to a time when their relationship wasn’t a complete disaster, although the warning signs are definitely there. “You’re getting too aggressive, Anakin,” Obi-Wan says. “Be careful. The goal of a Jedi is to defend life, not take it.”

This scene does a good job teasing how evil Anakin will become in the future and highlighting the traits that ultimately hasten his downfall. Anakin is so focused on winning and blinded by the fear of failure that he starts making hasty decisions and gets overconfident when he thinks he’s won. He attacks fiercely and shows how anger can overcome him when he’s trying so hard to prove himself by hitting Obi-Wan. “Mercy does not defeat the enemy, Master,” Anakin says. “That’s why you’re going to lose.”

In the end, of course, it’s Anakin who loses. He claims victory multiple times, but Obi-Wan always rallies. This fascinating flashback gives us a glimpse of Anakin’s flawed side, but also shows how much love there was between him and his teacher. By reminding us of their former friendship, the breakdown in their relationship becomes all the more heartbreaking.
