In the low-budget film Desperado, Antonio Banderas plays a armed guitarist ready to take down anyone who stands in his way in his quest for revenge, and one of the people sent to stop him , is Danny Trejo’s character Navajas. When the actor auditioned for the role, he recalled that things went very differently than other auditions he had experienced before. “I walked into Robert Rodriguez’s Venice office and his words were, ‘Wow, you remind me of the bad boys in my high school,'” the actor said of breaking down his iconic characters with GQ (via YouTube). “I said, ‘I’m the bad guys in your high school.’ And so he just handed me a knife and said, ‘Here, turn this.’ Trejo’s Desperado persona, Navajas, is a killer who loves to throw knives with solid precision. Though Trejo was only in the film briefly and had no lines, Trejo said he received a lot of praise for his performance from the director, who said, ” You can say more with your face than most actors can say with one side of dialogue, “That’s one hell of a compliment, you know?”

Trejo would go on to star in several bigger films after that, but he has admitted he prefers smaller budgets like Desperado and working in the world of independent cinema. “I think I’m the king of independent films and I love it! I like doing them,” the actor told The Hollywood Reporter. “Sometimes with really high budget movies you just sit in your trailer. I can’t stand being in trailers: it reminds me of a prison cell.” It seems that Trejo prefers the freedom that the independent side of filmmaking offers, based on his experiences, and one of his fondest memories is of being a Blade turning for Robert Rodriguez
