The news comes from an interview with Danai Gurira in Self magazine, which revealed that not only is she starring in the untitled Rick and Michonne spin-off of The Walking Dead, but she’s also working on it with producer and writer Scott Gimple She also shares a “Created By” credit on the show.
It might be rare for an actor on a TV show to have such a strong hand in the writers’ room, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone familiar with Gurira’s work outside of Black Panther and The Walking Dead In the theater world, she’s an accomplished playwright, so transitioning into television writing makes perfect sense.
During the interview, Gurira spoke about the importance of her role to the many fans of The Walking Dead. “If you’re just trying to smack truth into the story and give full life, dimension, and humanity to your characters, who you know don’t have many on screen, you don’t know what it’s going to do, who it’s going to have an impact,” Gurira said. “But when you connect with the fans and see and experience how they’ve been touched and sometimes empowered, [the impact becomes clear].”
Collider reported that Gurira and Andrew Lincoln made surprise appearances at a San Diego Comic-Con panel to promote the upcoming spin-off and revealed that filming will begin soon. The good news for The Walking Dead fans waiting to wrap up the Rick and Michonne story is that you won’t have to wait much longer.
