Deadline’s Lynette Rice asked just three questions to address Matthew Gray Gubler’s absence in her interview with Erica Messer on Criminal Minds: Evolution. In response to why the actor didn’t take part in the action of confronting a team of strangers, she had a very practical answer for fans. He was just too busy to make it happen.

“He’s done other projects, and a lot of those were lined up during our window,” Messer said. “Our rotation window was just August to December 2nd. The same was with Daniel Henney working on ‘The Wheel of Time’. So I couldn’t get them, but I could get the six other cast members. You’ve never been better. You are so happy. Your characters took the same time off because of the pandemic as we do in real life. The world has changed since we last saw BAU. And because of that, the characters have changed. We had to write about the reality of our existence.”

Gubler projects Messer has alluded to since Criminal Minds was canceled include the low-budget indie comedy King Knight and a recurring role on the TV series Dollface. In the film, Gubler reunited with Criminal Minds alumni Aubrey Plaza (who rivaled Dr. Reid) and Angela Sarafyan (who appeared in the season 6 finale “Supply and Demand”). In the series, Gubler appeared alongside Kat Dennings as an awkward love interest/catsitter for seven episodes in the short-lived two-season run. But those weren’t the only projects Gubler worked on. Another venture really surprised fans.
