Florida on Sunday breaks the record for most hospitalization per day. The last time when hospitalizations went haywire, was a year ago and vaccines were unavailable.
According to data reported to the US Department of health and human service, the state had 10,207 people hospitalized. The last time when this happened was a year ago on July 23, 2020.
Covid-19 Hospitalization Hits The Peak In Florida
Florida is leading now in per capita hospitalization for Covid-19. In the past week, there has been an average of 1525 adult hospitalization in Florida. In Florida, residents have returned to pre-pandemic activities. Amidst this, a more transmittable delta variant has spread across the state.
Experts say that this rise in Covid cases is striking and at the same time not surprising. Federal health data shows that the state reported 21,683 new cases of COVID-19, its highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic. The numbers show how quickly the new variant is spreading in the Sunshine state.
Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has resisted mandatory mask mandates and vaccine requirements. Florida’s Democratic agriculture commissioner, Nikki Fried, has instructed the unvaccinated persons to get vaccinated. Fried also said that this uprise is going to affect every single person in the state.
Hospitals have become overwhelmed throughout Florida. Pinellas County administrator, Barry Burton said that some local hospitals are already getting forced to divert ambulances to other locations due to capacity issues.
The number of children with the virus is also getting increased and this has become a concern for the state. These children also require intensive care, and that’s the main concern. Dr. Marcos Mestre, vice president, and the chief medical officer told the Miami Herald that there were 17 patients with COVID-19 on Friday, six in the ICU and one who needed a ventilator in the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. None of them were vaccinated.
The Mayo clinic hospital have exceeded their capacity and have asked to operate this situation until the surge ends. This summer surge has startled health workers and other authorities.
According to the official reports, the vast majority of patients are hospitalized now in Florida. A week ago the number of hospitalized in Florida was 7,391. But now, it has gone to its peak.
The new number of cases would surpass the previous record number, according to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.
According to Jason Salemi, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of South Florida, the last week’s number and the latest number of hospitalization are the highest capita rate in the nation.
Florida Department of Health Communications Director Weesam Khoury told the Miami Herald has said that they will only update the cases weekly instead of publishing them daily.
