Universal Pictures shared the official announcement for “Oppenheimer” on its YouTube page Thursday morning — but it’s not your traditional first look. The announcement is live and plays continuously without the viewer being able to watch from a specific point. The same footage is repeated over and over again with no end in sight. In addition, the feed constantly updates the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds (to the thousandth of a second) until the premiere of “Oppenheimer”.
We get our first footage of Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, obsessively adjusting his hat at one point and walking toward the camera in slow motion amidst a throng of flashbulbs at another scene – Peaky Blinders fans will notice a resemblance here. There’s a clear start and end point, though the video is live and repeated, and it begins with voiceover by Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) describing how the world is changing. Shortly after, several other characters’ voiceovers describe how important Oppenheimer is, with one calling him “the most powerful man who ever lived.” There are short cuts to solar flares and incendiary bombs, mixed with the most menacing music imaginable (typically Christopher Nolan), which in the theater will likely be playing at a decibel so high you can’t think. We don’t get a glimpse of Oppenheimer himself, but Murphy seems completely immersed in the character.
