Chris Evans is very much in favor of including the portrayal of same-sex couples in Lightyear or any other film, and in a recent interview with Reuters Television he had some pretty harsh words about people who think differently.
“The real truth is these people are jerks,” Evans said of the people who are against inclusion in movies. “Any time there’s been social progress in waking up, American history, human history, is a story of ongoing social awakening and growth, and that does us good.”
The actor also expressed his belief that the naysayers are a dying breed and that their protests are motivated by insecurity.
“There will always be people who are scared and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before,” he said. “But these people are dying like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to ignore them, to march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human.”
Although Evans has spoken in general, he also commented specifically on the “Lightyear” kissing scene. In an interview with Variety, he said he was delighted with Disney’s decision to recreate the scene in the film – although he found it disappointing that people still feel something like this isn’t seen as completely normal.
