Officials had announced on Friday that the country has given its node to the Johnsons & Johnsons vaccine for approval. The country’s health regulator has cleared the vaccine shot this week.

Canada Approves Johnsons & Johnsons Vaccine, the 4th Vaccine To Be Approved In The Country
Health Canada looks after the approval of the vaccines in the country. According to Dr. Supriya Sharma, Chief medical advisor at Health Canada, the regulatory body has approved 4 vaccines so far. Before the single-shot vaccine by Johnsons & Johnsons, three other vaccines were already approved.
Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Moderna were already in use in the country. These vaccines are administered twice to develop a full immunity against the virus.
Canada do not have a domestic production of these vaccines in the country. America has denied the export of the vaccines manufactured there. Many neighboring countries, including Canada and Mexico, have to rely upon the European and Asian countries for the import of the COVID-19 vaccines. Canada is already facing a shortage of vaccine doses.
According to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the country has signed an agreement with Johnsons and Johnsons to supply 10 million vaccine doses before September. However, it is not immediately clear when will the first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine will be delivered to the nation.
However, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that Pfizer is about to deliver additional 1.5 million doses to Canada in March. Pfizer will also deliver additional 1 million doses in April and May, that is well ahead of schedule.
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said that they have every reason to be optimistic about the situation. They are able to move things forward. He added that at the same time they should be aware of the fact that the pharma companies are a part of global supply chain that are being set up accordingly. There are always chances of disruptions in the supply.
The COVID-19 vaccine by Johnsons & Johnsons was already approved in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had given emergency approval to the vaccine last month. FDA said that the vaccine by Johnsons & Johnsons give protection against serious illness, hospitalization and death due to moderate to severe infection. To them, this matters most.
The clinical trial reports have suggested about 85% protection against the aforementioned conditions in Americans and around the world. The vaccine has also proved its efficacy on the South African nationals, where the new coronavirus variants are spreading. The single shot vaccine can protect against death and hospitalization due to the infection even against the new variants the world is concerned about.
Johnsons & Johnsons is also seeking approval for emergency authorization of the vaccine in other nations in Europe and Asia. The World Health Organization (WHO) was also approached by the company for the approval of the vaccine. The company is set to produce about 1 billion doses by the end of the year.
Canada is facing acute shortage of vaccines. They are deliberating over extending the time period between two shots of the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines to three to four months instead of the recommended period of three to four weeks to inoculate more people into the vaccination drive.
Canada is not expecting to receive any vaccine doses of AstraZeneca from Europe for months ahead. But they are waiting to receive about 500,000 AstraZeneca doses from India this month.
Canada is still continuing with extreme restrictions in the country. Now with the vaccination drive in process, they are willing to ease some of the restrictions.
