Broly movie despite strong domestic USA theater sales

It’s official, after an exceptional debut at the box office opening weekend, the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie is now officially the highest-grossing domestic Dragon Ball movie of all time based on US box office figures.

Internationally, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’s global box office still needs a few tens of millions to surpass films like Dragon Ball Super: Broly, but it’s an impressive achievement nonetheless.

The film, which follows the return of the Red Ribbon Army, comes at a time when anime films have exceeded box office expectations. With the overwhelming success of films like Kimestu no Yaiba Mugen Train, more and more franchises are announcing film projects.

Produced by Toei Animation, the film has done well with both fans and critics, earning a fresh 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.54 on My Anime List.

To capture the title of number one Dragon Ball movie in the US, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero had to overtake nine other franchise movies. According to IMDbPro’s Box Office Mojo, these are the following Dragon Ball box office figures for the films in the US as of the time of this article’s publication:

  1. Dragon Ball Super: Superhero (2022) – $31,289,350
  2. Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018) – $30,712,119
  3. Dragon Ball Evolution (2009) – $9,362,785
  4. Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection “F” (2015) – $8,008,363
  5. Dragon Ball Z: Clash of the Gods (2013) – $2,553,002
  6. Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993) – $658,982
  7. A tie between Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku (1990) & Dragon Ball Z: Revival Fusion (1995) – $270,354

Super Hero not only became the highest-grossing Dragon Ball film in franchise history, but also the fifth-highest-grossing anime film of all time.

At the time of this writing, Super Hero’s current $31 million is just below the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which premiered in US theaters in March 2022. The other top ten anime movies according to IMDbPro’s Box Office Mojo are:
