Marcelo Queiroga, the Brazilian health minister has tested Covid-19 positive while being in the UN General Assembly. It was announced by the Brazilian president on Tuesday evening.
Marcelo was part of Jair Bolsonaro Presidential committee and there he was added that “he is doing well”. Meanwhile, other Brazilian Delegations have tested negative.
Marcelo told CNN on Tuesday that he will be quarantined in New York for the next 14 days. And did not leave the US with other members of the delegation. While some of the delegation members have canceled their participation due to the increased risk of infecting members from different countries.
Brazilian Health Minister Tested For Covid-19 Positive
Marcelo was a cardiologist, Brazil’s fourth health minister since this pandemic began. He was appointed there this year.
Queiroga was also vaccinated with the Chinese developed Covid-19 vaccine CoronaVac. It was informed by the minister last week. Meanwhile, he didn’t say when he had received the booster.
CNN Brasil was the first to report on the minister’s condition ahead of the president’s statement.
One spokesperson of the UN secretary-general has declined the comment and said that they have the contact tracing protocol in place if cases arise at the UN headquarters.
Earlier this week, Marcelo had come under fire for responding to the protest in New York City with an obscene gesture, as per the CNN Brasil report. The video has gone viral on social media showing the moment when he appeared in the window of a minibus and gestured to the protestors at the residence of the Brazilian mission at the UN.
Before UNGA starts up on Tuesday, the suspicions of the international conference might maintain the health risk and particularly with much of the US battling severe Covid-19 explosions. In August, the US government issued a letter that encouraged world leaders to consider joining the virtual and not in-person to help avoid the super spreader event.
More than the 100 heads of state and government had arrived in person for the event with unvaccinated persons.
The vocal amongst them has been President Bolsonaro who has downplayed the stringency of the pandemic salad and had advocated for the use of unproven drugs. He has also declared point-blank on social media that he would not get vaccinated because he had been infected with the virus once.
On Tuesday, Bolsonaro fulfilled the myth by delivering the first speech at the meeting. There other Brazilian delegations are also present. President has meetings with other leaders that include UK prime minister Boris Johnson and UN secretary, General Antonio Guterres.
Gilson Neto, the Brazilian tourism minister posted the photos which showed the members of the Brazilian delegation eating pizza in the outdoors of New York City on Sunday. And no one was wearing masks.
Soon after the announcement, Queiroga has been tested positive for Covid-19. Bolsonaro has released a video on Twitter that shows that he is greeting and shaking hands with the supporters of the hotel.
