Blue Lock manga and plot
The original manga was written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. It has been serialized since August 2018 in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine, which also publishes Fire Force, Eden’s Zero, and other series.
At the 45th Kodansha Manga Awards in 2021, the series also took home the award for Best Shonen, which Tokyo Revengers had won the year before.
Kodansha has announced an English print publication for summer 2022.
Blue lock plot
The main character of Blue Lock is Yoichi Isagi, a young and promising forward who is among the people selected for the Blue Lock program. He receives the invitation just as he loses his composure after his team’s crushing loss at Nationals.
He thinks they might have won if the player had made the winning shot instead of giving the ball to his teammate. Yoichi can’t help but jump at the chance to pursue his goal as it has the potential to produce the best attackers in the league. However, what he will encounter is not your usual boot camp.
Blue Lock deviates from the standard teamwork concept unlike other sports anime, although the central theme of the series is a generally team-oriented sport. Unlike feel-good shows like Days and Haikyu!! the anime is more like a battle royale with a sporty touch.
Athletes are forced to compete against each other to hone their skills, with Jinpachi’s ego and unique perspective in charge. It becomes a case of survival of the fittest, just like other battle royale series.
While the anime won’t necessarily depict death, the gruesome elimination process will simulate it. Finally, disqualified players from the Blue Lock are not allowed to represent their nation in international football competitions.
Blue Lock, a football-themed anime, undermines the idea of teamwork and instead emphasizes individualism and selfishness. It’s more like a deadly battle royale anime than a happy, teen-thrilled shonen anime.
