In a Variety feature on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Letitia Wright recalled what was going through her mind the day Chadwick Boseman died. Wright said he thought, “Is someone trying to prank me?” As the emotions spilled over, she thought, “This isn’t a good joke. That’s not okay.” To make sense of it all, the actress called Boseman but no one answered, so she texted, “Hey bro, this is Tish. Please pick up.”
Shortly after, Wright reached out to another friend and performer she thought might help — Daniel Kaluuya. “I was like, ‘Yo; I think everyone’s tripping right now. I’ll give you about five seconds to tell me this isn’t real,'” the actress recalled calling Kaluuya. “He was super quiet. I was like, ‘Okay, well, if you don’t tell me, I’ll keep calling Chad until he answers.'” But the ‘Get Out’ star broke his silence and said, “‘Tish, what are you doing? ‘”
Kaluuya didn’t want Wright to keep calling Boseman about the potential impact on his family. After Wright heard her co-star mention Boseman’s family, the sad news ripped through.
She wasn’t the only one who didn’t believe the news. Ryan Coogler denied Boseman’s death and, like Wright, called a friend to see if it was true. That friend was Denzel Washington, who also wondered if the news was true. Shortly after their conversation, the information was released online.
