Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has received critical acclaim and currently has a Certified Fresh rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. While positive reviews were expected, it’s a breath of fresh air when fans are praising the film’s visual effects. After projects like She-Hulk and Thor: Love and Thunder were criticized for their visual effects, the recent trip to Wakanda has received mostly positive reviews.
Twitter user @mcuquake was brutally honest with her opinions, saying, “The CGI in #WakandaForever was amazing. I’m not sure what happened in ‘Thor 4’ but they definitely got a good budget for this film because it looked flawless.” @getawayonce echoed a similar sentiment, saying that director Ryan Coogler’s latest “destroyed all of this year’s other marvel releases in the visual and CGI aspects.” The positive comments about the film’s visual effects could also be found on Reddit, with user u/1TripLeeFan saying they liked “how the CGI was tasteful at the end and looked really good…compared to the last film”.
Is there a reason Wakanda Forever received special care in the visual effects departments? Production on the film ended in late March (via ComicBook.com), giving VFX houses over 7 months to create the world of Wakanda. Could Marvel also be taking its recent criticism to heart and trying to maintain a positive image after a spate of negative reports about their VFX that have manifested themselves in recent months? It’s not a far-fetched possibility considering even Marvel creatives like She-Hulk boss Jessica Gao have called out the studio about the poor treatment of VFX companies and their employees.
