In an interview with Vanity Fair, both Dwayne Johnson and director Jaume Collet-Serra spoke about the effort that went into making Black Adam and the myriad sources of inspiration. One aspect that kept coming up was that the character of Black Adam is much more revenge-motivated than many of the contemporary DC superheroes, and as such drew from sources much closer to anti-heroes than characters like Superman.

Collet-Serra mentioned one particular character as an inspiration for Black Adam, saying, “I spoke to him early on [Dwayne Johnson] about how there were many similarities between Black Adam and Dirty Harry, a 70’s rule-breaking movie. The systems were corrupt, so you had criminals exploiting that. They needed a cop to cut through the cops and basically do what needs to be done.

He continued, “It fits very well with Black Adam and his mindset. I think that speaks to pretty much everyone. Everyone knows the world isn’t fair sometimes, and you need people who break the rules to level the game.” According to AMC Movie Blog, the 1971 film “Dirty Harry” and its titular protagonist, played by Clint Eastwood , an entire genre of cops with a chip on their shoulders and a disrespect for bureaucracy, which is still an expression that can be seen in any of the many cop dramas of the moment, but one thing is for sure, and this is that Black Adam is likely to knock some heads in the upcoming movie when he is compared to Dirty Harry Callahan.
