Heather (Amy Landecker), an attorney and close friend of Grace, helps protect Grace from her abusive husband. Heather seems to be one of the few people to know that Grace changed her identity, and she’s definitely the first person to suspect James after Grace’s disappearance. So James blackmails Heather into keeping her quiet.
We know Heather knew more than she was letting on, and she almost certainly suspected James, but exactly how much did she know about her situation? Did she know Kevin was involved in the kidnapping? Did Heather, like the rest of the world, believe that Grace had been kidnapped in Columbia, or did she already know that Grace was being taken to the airport? She clearly didn’t believe the theory that Grace didn’t want to be found – the ominous photo James had left on her desk proved otherwise. Also, did Heather know June would be a target? Her insistence that June not investigate herself suggests that Heather hoped June would be safe as long as she didn’t get too close to the truth about James.
When June becomes suspicious of Heather and seeks her out, she finds Heather’s computer in the process of erasing his hard drive, destroying any evidence that may have led to James. The film never reveals if James did this after killing Heather or if he blackmailed Heather into doing it himself.
