The Sandman Season 1 makes it clear that Dream has had many names over the centuries. In the sixth episode, “A Hope in Hell,” Dream and Matthew the Raven venture into Lucifer Morningstar’s famously cozy and warm realm known as Hell. On their journey, they meet a woman named Nada who is imprisoned there. She recognizes Dream, calls him Ka’ckul, and begs him to free her. Dream admits that even though it’s been 10,000 years, he still loves her – but he won’t set her free just yet. At Matthew’s urging about the story of how they know each other, Dream reveals that Nada is the leader of a tribe and they fell in love once, but he sent her to hell for defying him.
Nada’s imprisonment is a shocking example of Dream’s ruthless streak, which occasionally rears its head throughout the series. However, the Lord of Dreams undergoes a transformation as the story progresses, as he begins to learn many lessons from humanity, particularly about the importance of compassion and forgiveness. After 10,000 years, it might be time for him to let the past rest. He knows where Nada is and he admits he still loves her. So what are the odds that he now decides to go back and free her?
