Avatar 2 Outpaces The Original’s Box Office Numbers In Its 3rd Week
“Avatar: The Way of Water” fished over $66 million at the box office in its third weekend (via Variety). In a rare feat, the James Cameron sequel managed to gain a 4% increase over the second weekend. The sequel continues to hold up well, emulating similar legs to the original. The film’s four-day domestic gross, including New Year’s Day, is $86.3 million. Domestically, The Way of Water has grossed over $440 million at the box office.
In comparison, the original “Avatar” grossed $352 million in its third weekend (January 1, 2010), according to The Numbers. The first film in the franchise, however, snagged more domestically, grossing $68 million in its third week. Nonetheless, the sequel continues to do well. The film is a worldwide hit with gross sales of 1.4 billion US dollars. The film will overtake Tom Cruise’s $1.48 billion Top Gun: Maverick in a matter of days, making The Way of Water the highest-grossing film of 2022. It remains to be seen how far the Avatar sequel will go.
With a relatively empty January (apart from “M3GAN”), “The Way of Water” should continue its impressive trajectory. Will James Cameron’s Latest Movie Gross Another $2 Billion? Only time can tell.
