In an cast session for the Los Angeles Times—which also included Brendan Fraser, Paul Dano, and others—Austin Butler described how he approached the audition for Elvis. After Butler noted that he thinks people see Elvis as either a musical icon or the goofy cultural figure who created the age of impersonators getting married in Las Vegas, Butler said he first came up with the idea to portray the late singer on a human level I think of him as a father and husband. Butler said: “For me, it was a few things that started to become those keys [to understanding Elvis] and one of them was simply a sense of responsibility [Elvis’s daughter] Lisa Marie and too [Elvis’s ex-wife] Priscilla.”

Then, once Butler knew that Luhrmann was in the process of making the biopic, he began doing a lot of research on Elvis, including watching all the documentaries he could find. Through this research, he found something important that he had in common with Elvis. Butler said: “I found out that Elvis’ mother died when he was 23. And that’s how old I was when my mother died, a 23-year-old man whose best friend died.”
