Trina Nishimura caught up with Attack on Titan voice actors Bryce Papenbrook and Mike McFarland to talk to Rolling Stone about some behind-the-scenes details of the voice actors on the show. “So I read first for Sasha, who I love because she loves potatoes, and I love potatoes,” Nishimura joked. Here she’s referring to the hilarious scene at the beginning of the series where Sasha Braus (Yu Kobayashi/Ashly Burch) is caught eating potatoes during basic training. The moment was so memorable that both fans in real life and characters on the show still regularly refer to Sasha as the “potato girl.”
Nishimura went on to reveal that she also read for Armin Arlert (Marina Inoue/Josh Grelle) before reluctantly attempting the role of Mikasa. “Well, that’s not going to happen,” she recalled, laughing. “Sure, I’ll read for her. And I was incredibly surprised to be cast because so many people wanted to be a part of the project.”
However, because Nishimura jumped at the chance, she ended up playing the role of a fan-favorite character, regularly seen as a whirling terror blade capable of ripping apart both titans and humans with ease.
