At Least One Westworld Character Isn’t Who They Appear To Be In Season 4

If you’ve caught up with Westworld, you’ll remember that Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores is dead at the end of the show’s third season. Given that her character is an android rather than an organic being, fans could assume that recent confirmation from ATX Festival 2022 (via Deadline) that Wood’s return to the show means Dolores is making a comeback, too, somehow. But you’d be wrong, according to show co-creator Lisa Joy, as well as Wood.

During a Westworld panel discussion touching on Season 4, Joy confirmed, “Dolores is dead. But I really like Evan, and she’s kind of clinging too, so I had to bring her back. We’re writing a whole new character for her,” Joy said at the ATX Fest’s “Westworld” panel. So who does Wood play? That would be Christina, who Wood describes as “a normal woman who lives in a big city and is just trying to make it as a writer.” She continued, “I was told that Dolores would meet her rather tragic end in Season 3, so I had a few conversations with her [co-creator] Jonathan [Nolan] and Lisa at the time about what that meant. They said, ‘Yeah, you’re going to come back this season looking a lot like Evan Rachel Wood, but I’m not me.'”

As if that wasn’t confusing enough, James Marsden also made a surprise appearance on the podium, announcing his return to the show after being absent in Season 3. At the time of reporting, it’s unclear who will play Marsden, but it seems unlikely that he’ll reprise his teddy role after the character’s death in Season 2. Deadline’s report states that he met a mysterious gentleman on a date Christina is playing. Only time will tell what connection these characters have.
