Brotherhood ties don’t just die because your on-screen personality sacrifices itself for the club. Opie Winston’s death in prison was brutal and heartbreaking, an event Jax never recovered from. And while Ryan Hurst’s departure from the show was comparatively moving, it was a little gentler. After his character’s death, Charlie Hunnam and co-star Mark Boone sent off Junior Hurst in a manner befitting his beloved character. In an exclusive Entertainment Weekly clip, Hunnam and Junior are seen in tears cutting off Hurst’s beard in parting for the character.

“Three months after he finished filming ‘Sons,’ he still hadn’t cut his beard and he hadn’t shaved in five and a half years since he landed the role of Opie. He hadn’t shaved once,” Hunnam told The Hollywood Reporter. The act was carried out with a powerful 44-inch samurai sword, which Hunnam further described. “It has a certain meaning because that’s what a samurai would do at the end of their career,” Hunnam said. “They took their swords and cut off their topknots to signify the end of their lives as warriors.”

Hurst may have been fired from the show, but that didn’t mean the end of the relationship between him and his co-stars. It was some time before the two crossed paths again, but Hurst and Hunnam found ways to stay in touch after Sons of Anarchy ended.
