“I think the success of ‘Law & Order’ is largely due to the fact that it’s not about a character on the show, it’s about the crime,” Anthony Anderson said in an interview with Stage Right Secrets. “It’s about what’s being pulled from the headlines and what’s being resolved here and dealt with in court. So no matter where you start on this show, what year you tune in to this show, no matter which cast member has changed, you will always be able to follow the show.”

Unlike a soap opera or ongoing television drama, Law & Order is a show that doesn’t require you to watch the episodes in any particular order to understand what’s happening. As u/DrewDonut says on a Law & Order subreddit, “There’s no real place to start. Each episode is self-contained so you don’t have to worry about that. And there are very few overarching stories.”

While the main cast of “Law & Order” changes from cops and lawyers, the personal lives of these characters are not the focus, so the stories remain essentially the same. We may love or hate some characters for their actions, but we often know little about their lives outside of their work. “Law & Order” is successful because you can watch it at any time and know exactly what to expect.
