Confusion arises amongst the Americans as reports of children getting affected by the common winter virus, in this summer season, have started making headlines. Children are being diagnosed with infections of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) that are supposed to show corona-like symptoms. The RSV affects the nose, lungs and throat and the symptoms include cough, runny nose, etc. With similar symptoms as observed when a person gets infected with the novel coronavirus, people in California are worried as to what should be done; should they take their kids to the doctors for Covid testing or not.
Is Your Child Covid Positive Or Suffering From RSV?
RSV is seen to affect the children more and that is creating a sense of alarm among the parents as they want to keep their children safe. Children might develop a serious cough that takes almost six weeks to get clear, but mostly the symptoms last for about a week or a maximum of ten days.
The virus is reported to also cause pneumonia or bronchiolitis in infants, which is an inflammation of the small airways in the lungs. It is also said that RSV can cause complications in people older than 50 with severe cardiac disorders or lung diseases.
Dr. Deborah Liu, the associate director of emergency medicine at Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles, said that since most of the respiratory viral attacks have like symptoms, it is a very difficult job for any health care concern to distinguish between the exact cause of the infection, especially in such a time when the whole world is reeling under the effects of another fatal virus with almost equivalent responses.
The virus being highly contagious, it has been advised by the experts from the Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles, that the child, suspected of being infected by the virus, should be kept away from others who are at risk because of other serious illnesses.
The child should be immediately tested for the Covid-19, so as to rule it out and focus on treating RSV. Covid-19. Dr. Liu recommends getting a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test that gives results in about 24 hours, as nobody would want to be responsible for the community spread of the virus.
Dr. Steven Abelowitz, the Medical Director of Coastal Kids, a pediatric group in Orange County, California, said that there had been a significant rise in the number of viral infections amongst the children, since the opening up of many places after the lockdown. The kids are now getting exposed to a greater number of viruses than before and are hence, at a greater risk.
More children are getting affected by the winter viruses that are not common during this summer season. The US Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention have recently issued an alert regarding the rise in RSV cases in the Southern States, mentioning further that the emergence of RSV cases during the summer is unusual.
In the present scenario, when the New World is again getting worried about the number of constantly rising cases, and the various protests against and also for the lockdown rules, a threat has come in the form of RSV. The implementation of the new rules on vaccinations for the children and making them available after successful trials is surely the need of the hour. For RSV, which has symptoms similar to covid, the preventive measures are similar as well, staying at home, staying well-hydrated, taking ibuprofen in case of fever and waiting for the vaccine.
