Andor’s Denise Gough Describes How Power Is A ‘Dangerous Force’ For Her Villainous Character

While Dedra Meero is a woman rising in a male-dominated hierarchy, Denise Gough is careful to point out that she’s not really a person to cheer for on Andor, as that hierarchy is evil. They are, after all, the Galactic Empire.

“She’s a woman in a man’s world, and you kind of have her back; you want her to succeed. But then you’re faced with the reality that you’re hoping for a woman to rise through the ranks of a fascist organization,” Gough told Looper. “What I love is that we’re showing that the impact of power and ambition has the same impact whether you’re a man or a woman – and if you come from something like what Dedra comes from, which is a sense of lack and their need for control, then you can be a very dangerous force when given power.”

As such, Gough said she really enjoys the character dynamic that Dedra presents to her as an actress. “We’re going to see a woman in this position to show that it’s not about gender, it’s about power. Seeking power from a place of scarcity is a dangerous proposition for anyone. It can have super dangerous results,” Gough noted. “Sure, when I started reading the beginning I was like, ‘I want her to do well. Oh, no, actually I don’t want her. She’s bad. Is you bad?’ But everyone has upside and downside… What you want to instill in a villain is a sense of humanity, but the grace of whatever [direction] you believe in leaving.”

Andor streams exclusively on Disney+, with new episodes premiering every Wednesday through November 23.
