Warning: Spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 1 to come.
Season 1 of Abbott Elementary ended definitively and optimistically. Janine decided to break up with her longtime boyfriend Tariq after he decided to move to New York. Meanwhile, prospective principal Gregory makes the decision to stay on at Abbott Elementary as a teacher. The finale also ended with Gregory holding hands with Taylor (Iyana Halley), which seems to leave Janine with a sour expression on her face. The series began with Janine and Gregory being typical “Will-they-won’t-they” lovers, and that seems to complicate matters between the two teachers.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Quinta Brunson spoke about how the future is not set in stone for Janine and Gregory and the importance of both teachers focusing on their own journey. “Janine is now looking for herself [ … ] And for the first time, she’s a single adult, and now she has space to figure out what that means,” Brunson said.
The showrunner and series star further confirmed that Janine is unlikely to start a relationship with Gregory any time soon, especially as he finds out the trajectory and direction of his career. “So I think these are two people coming of age right now, and we’ll continue to see them meet in the middle of that coming of age in season two,” Brunson said. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine the two getting together by the end of season two, although Abbott Elementary fans will just have to wait and see what happens to their favorite lovebirds.
